| Description: | The Japanese Cultural Fair is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to the presentation and preservation of the cultural traditions of Japan. It organizes an annual festival of the same name in June of each year to mark the beginning of the summer season. This year's festival is scheduled for June 8, 2013; it will be the 27th consecutive year of the event. Admission is free. | ||
| Mission: | The mission of the Japanese Cultural Fair is to provide an opportunity for the community to increase its awareness and understanding of the Japanese culture. We believe that through an increased exposure to the culture of Japan, we can improve mutual understanding among neighbors on the Pacific Rim and enrich our community life here in Santa Cruz. | ||
| Programs: | The primary focus is to organize the Cultural Fair every year. Co-sponsors and/or major sponsors have included: the City of Santa Cruz, its Sister Cities Program (Shingu, Japan is the City's Sister City), the Japanese American Citizens League, Aikido of Santa Cruz, Zen Center of Santa Cruz, Watsonville Taiko Group, Cultural Council of Santa Cruz County, Cruzio Internet Services, Community Television of Santa Cruz County, KUSP88.9 FM, and the Nichi Bei Weekly. | ||
| Facilities: | The main stage and 45-50 vendor booths of the Japanese Cultural Fair are located in Mission Plaza Park in Santa Cruz from 11 AM to 6 PM. At the same time, martial arts demonstrations are presented at the Aikido of Santa Cruz Dojo on Mission Street, and tea ceremonies, meditation, flower arrangement, kimono, and bonsai demonstrations are held at the Zen Center on School Street. | ||
| Meetings: | Regular meetings of the Board of Directors are held monthly on the second Monday from 5:30-7 PM, in the Courtyard Conference Room of the City of Santa Cruz City Council Chambers. Please call for more information. | ||
| Volunteer Info: | Anyone and everyone (regardless of age, sex, ethnicity, religion, physical disabilities, etc.) who agrees with our mission statement is welcome to get involved and participate on Fair Day and/or in organizing the event itself. The Japanese Cultural Fair is a totally volunteer organization. | ||
