Description:The Walnut Avenue Women's Center is a 501(c)3 public benefit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for women, children, and families in the local community for over 75 years. Through interactive, supportive programs, WAWC seeks to improve the economic, physical, and emotional well being of all families in Santa Cruz County.
Mission:To provide high quality support and services so that women, children, and families will have to opportunities and skills to thrive.

FAMILY LITERACY PROGRAMS-help children and families achieve academic and social success by enriching language development
The Even Start Family Literacy Program is a community partnerships that help break the cycle of poverty and illiteracy by integrating early childhood education, adult literacy or adult basic education, and parenting education into a unified family literacy program.

EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION

Downtown Children's Center: serves children ages 2.5 to entering kindergarten.

TAPP Infant Center (Teen Age Parent Program): serves infants of teen parents who are students in the Santa Cruz City School District.
TAM Infant/Toddler Center serves ages 2 months to two and 1/2 years. This site serves both teen parents and community parents. 429-3050

ASSOCIATED PROGRAMS:

African American Community Health Project:
"Healthy for Life", a series of health education lectures promoting healthy choices including nutrition, disease prevention and maintenance. Includes:
"Sisters Reaching Sisters" & "Reaching Brothers", tailored peer outreach promoting early cancer detection & screening.
"Juneteenth Health Fair", annual community health forum including general health information and free health screening held at Louden Center
Resource Library, support groups, 1 to 1 trained peer health outreach workers, university interns, community, church and salon outreach.
Office hours: Tuesday/Thursday 9-4pm
Meetings: 1 Friday evening per quarter 7p.m

SMART Single Moms Alliance for Resources and Tools
to support and inspire single moms to identify their goals and take action to achieve individual success, confidence and economic independence.

The California Center of Excellence for Trauma Informed Care program trains professionals and provides information and support to social service agencies to help them better understand the impact of trauma on the brain, decision-making and coping, and design programs, policies and procedures to respond effectively to traumatized individuals and populations.
