| Description: | Chapter 7 supports all area writers by providing members with advice, advocacy, services, and fellowship that will protect their rights as writers and advance their creative and professional careers.
Like the fifteen other Chapters of the National Writers Union, our Chapter exists to win greater respect, rewards and protection for freelance work, and to encourage mutual support and communication among writers. Our 170+ members' writing--often overlapping single categories--includes journalism, fiction, poetry, technical, academic, textbook, newsletter, and "all kinds." Nationally, the Union is campaigning to press the publishing industry to adopt writer-protective provisions in book, article, and journal contracts, and in electronic media. The standard journalism contract, already available for use, is one aspect of this national action. Another is the drive to compel more comprehensible royalty statements and more timely payments. Chapter 7, like the others, is part of the grass roots for these campaigns. We also improve and use NWU's contract guides and databases to help writers shop for the best publishers, agents, and contracts. ELIGIBILITY: NWU is the freelance writers' union, open to any writer seriously involved in the craft, regardless of genre. You are eligible for membership if you have published a book, play, three articles, five poems, one short story, or an equivalent amount of newsletter, publicity, technical, commercial, government or institutional copy. You are also eligible for membership if you have written an equal amount of unpublished material and you are actively writing and attempting to publish your work. FEES: Sliding scale dues based on income from writing: Minimum $120. May be paid in half installments. Credit card accepted for full year memberships. FUNDING SOURCE: Membership dues and support from parent organization. | ||
| Programs: | We also offer services --such as free contract and grievance advice, plus local programs and events to shore up our members, aid their work, and keep them in touch with each other. Chapter 7 offers free Writers Roundtables and Poetry Readings. See our Events page and newsletter for details. | ||
