| Description: | Our club was founded in Santa Cruz, CA in 1986 by Sharon and Stewart Saul, as the Akau Hana Outrigger Canoe Racing Association and subsequently renamed the Akau Hana Outrigger Canoe Club.
Our club was organized to foster the ocean experience to all persons regardless of physical abilities. We do this through the promotion of teamwork, family (ohana), physical exercise, environmental awareness, respect, sharing, and aloha (love). Our goal is to continually broaden community awareness of traditional Polynesian values and promote ocean, environmental, and athletic awareness for all participants. Outrigger Santa Cruz is a Federal, tax deductible, charitable 501(c)3 non profit organization. Newcomers are invited to paddle with us for one free introductory paddle on either the 1st or 3rd Sunday of every month at 9:00 AM. We will ask you to fill out a NCOCA liability waiver with Outrigger SC addendum, and we will provide you with a paddle, instruction, and a fun morning. We'll return back to the harbor shortly before noon. ELIGIBILITY: Open to all who can swim or wear a flotation device. FEES: After your free introductory paddle, you are welcome to join us for additional outings for $10/session. And if you find that you are paddling with us frequently, please consider paying annual dues for unlimited access to club equipment and coaching resources. Adult recreational paddlers: $130.00 Adult racing paddlers: $185.00 College recreational paddlers: $65.00 College racing paddlers: $92.50 Senior (65+ years old) recreational or racing: $100.00
| Programs: | We have year-long programs for teenagers and summer programs for keiki (children). We paddle in the safety of the Santa Cruz Small Boat Harbor when appropriate, and -- weather, conditions, and crew abilities permitting -- we paddle in the Monterey Bay, where ocean conditions are varied, challenging, and beautiful.
Join our novice, men's, women's, or children's race programs and compete in local and international races up and down the California coast as well as the east coast, Hawaii, and beyond. Our competitive paddlers practice 2 or 3 times per week and cross-train vigorously.
