| Description: | Housing for Independent People, Inc. (HIP) The agency mission is to prevent homelessness by providing affordable housing to people with special needs.
ELIGIBILITY: HIP serves very low-income people with developmental disabilities, psychiatric disabilities, people with AIDS/HIV+, and the elderly. The average income for the people we serve is $1300/month. Approximately 264 people are provided with affordable housing in 173 units of housing at 19 locations in the Bay Area, primarily in Watsonville, San Jose and Oakland. FUNDING SOURCE: HIP's 2.6 million dollar budget is derived from tenant rental income and charitable donations. Its ability to provide affordable housing has been made possible through low interest loans of 3-4% with the State of California, the City of San Jose and others. More than 90% of its rental revenue is used for the management and maintenance of the properties. | ||
