| Description: | The California Coalition of Barrios Unidos began as a community based peace movement in the violent streets of urban California in 1977 and incorporated as a non-profit organization in 1993. Over the past twenty-five years Barrios Unidos has developed a model that seeks to reclaim and restore the lives of struggling youth while promoting unity amongst families and neighbors through community building efforts.

| Programs: | The uniqueness of Barrios Unidos' Programs is our approach to the dilemma of youth violence. Our belief is that community workers who have experienced and overcome the challenges facing young people today are best able to assist them in choosing life affirming behavior. We focus on building positive self-esteem and cultural pride through meaningful activities, education and job training.
COMMUNITY OUTREACH: integral to the work of Barrios Unidos, staff members are called upon to provide their expertise and support in public schools, juvenile halls, prisons, and local communities, as well as communities throughout the nation and numerous organizations both nationally and internationally. Includes: Kids Clubs, Youth Groups, Parents Groups, Medi-Cal insurance, High School Mentoring, Juvenile Hall is a multi-cultural bilingual program that focuses on indigenous traditions and teaching, Street Outreach and Cultural Programs. COMMUNITY ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT: to provide jobs for youth from local communities and to assist Barrios Unidos to become economically self training. Barrios Unidos operates a full service, custom silkscreening service called BU productions which introduces youth to the work culture and provides training in a marketable trade.Youth Learn production, sales, marketing, design, and administration work. youth develop increased self-esteem, leadership skills, a sense of accomplishment, pride in their work, and hope for their future. COUNSELING PROGRAMS: A bilingual and culturally sensitive program, personalized to meet the individual needs of youth and to enhance the strengths and assets of each family. LEADERSHIP PROGRAMS: Warrior Circle: Week long retreat for boys and young men to develop skills in strengthening communication, teamwork, and conflict Adelita Circle: Week long retreat for girls and young women to develop skills in strengthening communication, teamwork, and conflict resolution. Volunteer: Long and short term oportunities available through internships, field studies, probation, or court mandates to gain work experience. | ||
