The Santa Cruz Municipal Utilities (SCMU) provides customer service for water, sewer, refuse and recycling services to the residents and businesses of the City of Santa Cruz, and services for water only to the unincorporated surrounding areas. Utility Service Representatives are available to answer your questions and provide assistance with your services. The Water Engineering Section (Suite C 420-5210) provides engineering, planning, and project design for construction of necessary water facilities and installation of water saving technologies. Keeps current with new technologies and water quality issues, remaining sensitive to mitigation of environmental impacts. Reviews all requests for water services. Maintains records of facilities, installations and maps. Engineering also oversees the Backflow Prevention Program. Counter Hours: Monday - Thursday and every other Friday 8:00am-12 Noon; 1:00pm to 5:00pm Water Conservation-see related agencies below The Water Resources Management Section (715 Graham Hill Rd., Santa Cruz 420-5483 is responsible for the drinking water source protection, environmental regulatory compliance, and general natural resource management work that is an important part of the delivery of clean drinking water to our customers. Along with other responsibilities, Resource Management staff provide environmental review and compliance support for the Department; conduct biological and hydrologic surveys, including drinking water source stream gaging and anadromous fishery habitat typing/population assessments; work on the Department's Habitat Conservation Plan; manage the Department's watershed lands, develop drinking water source assessments; and perform outreach and education with drinking water source watershed stakeholders. The Water Quality Lab (420-5480) monitors raw water sources, finished water, and distributed water. In 1990, an EPA-certified laboratory was built to increase the analytical capabilities in microbiology, inorganic chemistry, and organic chemistry. This EPA-certified water quality lab helps to insure the safety and aesthetics of the drinking water. Performing hundreds of tests year round, our monitoring program exceeds the state and federal requirements for testing. The Water Production Section (420-5450) operates and maintains water storage, diversion, collection, pumping, and treatment facilities from all sources throughout the system. Our system includes the Graham Hill Water Treatment Plant, which can process up to 16 million gallons of water per day and is the only conventional water treatment plant on the Monterey Bay. Loch Lomond Recreation Area-see related agencies The Water Distribution Section (1125 River St., Santa Cruz 420-5560) maintains and operates all transmission and distribution mains throughout the water piping network. Water Distribution also maintains and operates all service lines, hydrants and valves. Loch Lomond Recreation Area, including the scenic 175 acre Loch Lomond Reservoir, provides the public with fishing, picnicking, boating and hiking opportunities from March 1 to September 15. Water Department Rangers coordinate the operation of the park store and boat rental and provide public service in the forms of education, municipal code enforcement, and first aid. A staff of Recreation Area Attendants and seasonal Recreation Area Aides assist the Rangers in maintaining the Recreation Area, collecting fees, and operating the park store. | ||
