| Description: | Soroptimist is an international organization for business and professional women who work to improve the lives of women and girls, in local communities and throughout the world. The first Soroptimist club was formed in 1921 by a group of 80 women in Oakland, California.
Loosely translated from Latin, Soroptimist is a coined term meaning "best for women." Our local Soroptimist International club was chartered on June 29, 1929. Soroptimist International of Santa Cruz are professional women committed to service in their community, country, and internationally. From the very beginning, our club has worked together to help improve our community and to enhance human rights and the status of women throughout the world. ELIGIBILITY: Membership is by invitation and is based on a classification principle which assures broad representation of the business and professional community. FEES: There are annual dues plus a modest onetime induction fee. Weekly costs are for lunch, minor fines and participation in fun-and-fund-raising activities.
